Dear Editor,

I would like to say that I really appreciate Spencer Coyne’s article on food security where he emphasized the need for all of us to support local farmers.

In his op-ed of January 20, 2010, Spencer talks about the control Monsanto has over the seed supply and how it has systematically destroying farms. This point is well documented in two films: The World According to Monsanto and The Future of Food.

We need to ensure that farmers can control their own seed supply without being threatened by the biotech industry and contamination from genetically engineered crops.

In the meantime, let’s help our farmers by demanding good quality local food whenever we go shopping.
